Short History of the
Consulate General of Indonesia in Houston
The Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Houston was officially
opened and inaugurated on May 25, 1982 by the Ambassador of the Republic of
Indonesia Mr. D. Ashari. Its first Consul General was Mr. Rachadi Iskandar from
the period of 1982-1985.
Its jurisdiction and responsibilities encompass 10 states, namely: Texas,
Arkansas, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Lousiana, Mississippi, New Mexico,
Oklahoma, Tennessee and two United States self-governing commonwealths, U.S.
Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
From its earliest establishment until March 1988, the Consulate General of the
Republic of Indonesia in Houston resided at nineteenth floor of Three Post Oak
Central, 1990 Post Oak Boulevard and in April 1988, it relocated to 5633
Richmond Avenue.
Mindful to the fact that sufficient and representative building was required to
serve public interests, in 1993, Consul General Achmad Surjadi, with the
approval from the Department of Foreign Affairs Jakarta, purchased a property
building located in 10900 Richmond Avenue which hitherto serves as the
permanent establishment of the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia
which was officially inaugurated by the Minister for the Foreign Affairs Ali
Alatas in 1993.
The current Indonesian Consul General office is strategic in size and location
and has two exhibition rooms for culture and economics section displaying all
the unique Indonesian products as well as equipped with outdoor sport
facilities such as tennis and basketball.
